Sport Day - Team Building

I. Introduction to the team building program

1.1. What is team building?

team-building

Outdoor team building activities

Team building is a type of group activity organized to enhance team spirit and interaction among members within a group or organization. Typically, team building is organized through diverse and enjoyable activities, often outdoors, to stimulate active participation and promote positive social relationships within the team.

Team building programs often involve games, sports activities, arts, trips, workshops, training, and exercises that promote management skills, communication, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork.

1.2. Popular types of team building games

The two most popular types of team building games nowadays are outdoor team building games and indoor team building games

  • Indoor team building games

Indoor team building game - "Who's Taller”

Secret message relay: Divide players into 5 teams and line them up in 5 rows. The first person will listen to a long, tricky sentence from the game master, then relay it to the next person within 20 seconds. Finally, the last person must recite the sentence. The team with the closest approximation of the original sentence wins, or the team with the most matching words to the game master’s sentence wins.

The game "Object Design": All groups will be provided with materials to design an object (e.g., a ship, a building, a bridge...). Scores will be based on the creativity, completeness, and practicality of the object.

Word chain: The teams will line up vertically and compete against each other in a 1:1 format (determined by drawing lots). The members of each team will take turns remembering the word spoken by the opposing team and adding a new word. If either team fails to remember and respond correctly, they will lose.

Drawing lots format:

Round 1: The team drawing a paper with a ship icon proceeds directly to the semifinals (the remaining 4 teams will be divided into 2 pairs for a 1:1 match).

Round 2: With 3 remaining teams, the team drawing a paper advances directly to the finals.

Example of gameplay:

Team A: Go to work.

Team B: Going to work is fun.

Team A: Going to work is fun but also tiring.

Team B: Going to work is fun but also tiring if we don't meet the deadline...

(Note: The translation provided here aims to accurately represent the content of the original text, but please note that the rules and specific gameplay may vary in different contexts or variations of the game.)

Treasure hunt: Several items will be hidden throughout the room, and teams will have to find those items based on the game master’s instructions. The team that finds the most items within the specified time will be the winner.

Riddles: Several riddles will be presented, and teams will have to solve them. The team that answers the most riddles correctly will be the winner.

Random arrangement: The game master will play a piece of music, and members of the participating teams will randomly arrange themselves in a circle. When the music stops, the referee will shout the slogan: "Form n groups..." At that moment, players must actively embrace the other players around them to form the specified number of groups according to the referee's instructions. If a player fails to join any group, they are considered eliminated.

Treasure robbery: The members of two teams will have sequential numbers attached to their shirts. Both teams start from the starting line, and a treasure chest is placed at a designated location. The game master will call out a random number to request the person with that number from each team to rob the treasure chest. The person with the called number will have the right to rob and can ask for support from teammates or switch places with someone on the team if necessary.

Note: Team members need to listen carefully to the game master's number of calls to avoid penalties. The winning team will be the one with the most stolen treasure chests and successfully reaches the finish line without being touched by opponents.

Obstacle course

Number of teams: Unlimited

Number of participants: Each team consists of 7 to 10 people.

Equipment: Blindfolds and various obstacles.

Gameplay: The teams will line up vertically. Each team will have a section of the course set up with multiple obstacles. All team members except the first person will be blindfolded. The team leader, who is not blindfolded, has the task of leading the entire team to navigate the obstacles without any team members getting entangled or touching the obstacles. The team that completes the course in the fastest time wins.

Objective: Develop teamwork skills within the group.

Ball pick-up: Each round of play will involve 2 players (the next 2 players can only start when the first 2 players have reached the halfway point). Players will be equipped with a long paper stick as a tool. The players' objective is to pick up a plastic ball and move it from the starting line to the finish line (the distance between the two lines is 7m - 10m).

During the movement, the game master will play music and pause it at any time. When the music stops, all players must freeze and can only resume movement when the music starts again.

Zigzag ball passing: Each team member will be given a piece of cardboard as a paddle to hit the ball. Your task is to pass the ball in a zigzag path to the end of the designated course. When the ball has traveled 2/3 of the way, a new ball will be provided to the team. To pass the ball to the opposing team, you must answer a question correctly posed by the game master

Note:

- Hands should not touch the ball. You can only pass the ball using the provided paddle.

- Each player will have a designated area of movement and should not leave that area.

- Winning condition: Within the specified time, the team that completes a higher number of balls will win.

Passing the baton: This game is a relay race between team members with 5 challenges. After completing a challenge, the person at the front must pass the baton to the next person. The rules for each challenge are as follows:

Challenge 1: One-person elephant swing game 10 times.

Challenge 2: Two people jump rope together for 7 rounds.

Challenge 3: Three people search for 5 out of 7 essential items hidden within a picture provided by the game master.

Challenge 4: Four people stand on a folded piece of paper without letting their feet touch the ground for 10 seconds.

Challenge 5: Five people arrange themselves into a human shape matching the image provided by the game master and hold the position for 10 seconds.

After completing all 5 challenges, the team that finishes fastest will win and receive the corresponding points.

II. Detailed team building plan

When organizing any event, the first step is to create a detailed plan, which includes conceptualizing the event, identifying the participants, selecting a venue, and choosing appropriate team-building activities. Planning a successful team-building event is not easy. Even professional companies have to adhere to specific organizing plans to ensure success. To avoid overlooking any ideas and create the most suitable team-building program for your business, follow the steps below:

2.1. Define the objectives of the team building event

To successfully organize a team-building program, it is crucial to determine the purpose. You need to ask specific questions: Who is this program organized for? What are the goals of the program? What does the business want to achieve from this program? Clearly and specifically defining the objectives will help make the team-building process more effective and meet the desires and needs of the business and participants.

2.2. Determine the number and participants involved

To organize an effective team-building event, it is crucial to determine the number of participants and their demographics. You need to accurately identify the number of people attending to choose a suitable venue, allocate a budget, and plan the program accordingly.

Additionally, identifying the participants and their characteristics is also essential for designing the team-building program. You need to consider the participants' demographics, including gender, age, health conditions, occupations, as well as any personal issues they may be facing.

2.3. Budget for the team building program

The budget can include expenses such as venue rental, costs for activities and games, transportation, meals, accommodation, communication, photography, videography, standees, backgrounds, posters, game tools, and other miscellaneous expenses. However, the specific cost will depend on the scale, duration, and specific requirements of the program. Therefore, to accurately calculate the budget for the team-building program, businesses need to consult multiple sources of information and plan in detail before making a decision.

2.4. Generating ideas for the team building program

Ideas are the most important factor in achieving success in a team-building program. With their desires and expectations, organizations prioritize team building as a collective activity. Each program will have its concept and theme, delivering positive values and messages that leaders want to convey to their employees.

The ideas for a team-building program don't necessarily have to be the newest, but they should aim to be the most distinctive. Companies can also utilize colors to promote their brand to potential customers by designing clothing samples, backdrops, logos, and more.

2.5. Planning the timeline and venue

  • Setting the timeline

Team-building programs are often combined with trips or outdoor activities within a day. However, to better prepare in terms of budget, design, and catering for team members, it is advisable to plan the program at least one month in advance.

You need to consider the workload and characteristics of the company to choose a suitable time, such as organizing the program on weekends or at the beginning of the week.

  • Choosing the venue

There are various venue options for organizing a team-building program, including indoor and outdoor locations, resorts, tourist areas, and more. The choice of venue also impacts the formation of ideas and the theme of the program, as well as the activities and games to be used.

If you opt for an indoor venue, you can avoid the impact of weather conditions. If you choose an outdoor venue, it is important to thoroughly research the weather and climate in that area.

For a team-building kick-off or day trip, resorts and suburban tourist areas are ideal venues to consider.

2.6. Building the team-building program script

Building a script is an important factor in ensuring the success of a team-building program or any event. The script needs to clearly define the timeline, duration, and details of the necessary components to ensure smooth preparation and execution of the program. Additionally, the script should be based on the main theme of the program to create coherence and unity throughout the entire program.

2.7. Implementation of the Team Building Program

Once you have preliminary information, it's important to execute the various components and assign tasks to the individuals responsible. The work items can be divided into the following groups:

Logistics team: Responsible for logistics-related matters such as arranging transportation, hotels, team building venue, restaurants, sightseeing tickets, equipment, and event staff.

Creative team: Responsible for designing the game scripts and gala dinner. They brainstorm ideas for the theme, and content of the games, and design key visuals and backdrops for the program.
